About
Giorgio Militano,known as moonysreal.
Photography, writing and film are different languages I use to do the same thing: tell stories.

01 The name
Where moonysreal comes from
Underneath the name there is a feeling, not a concept. Over the years I built a deeper relationship with nature, lived more and more as a kind of primordial mother. Isolating myself in it, I started to feel something hard to describe: lightness, connection, suspension from reality.
It is the feeling of listening to folk or country music at sunset, running your hands through blades of grass. Feeling dreamlike.
MOONY — dreamlike, suspended. SREAL — a contraction of is real. The idea is that a feeling which normally comes and goes can become, through art, something real and continuous.
02 The thread
natura (umana)
One movement outward: places, territories, landscapes, cultures, communities, people. One movement inward: identity, emotion, discomfort, fear, desire, memory, fragility, meaning.
They are the same spiral. Every time I go far enough out, I end up digging deeper in.
What I look for are not the subjects. They are the emotions hidden inside the stories.
03 The work
Four languages, one job
Roughly half photography, a quarter writing, a fifth film, the rest audio. The result is one hundred per cent storytelling. Photography stays the main language without becoming a cage.
The work has moved from an obsession with aesthetics towards filling that language with meaning: mental health, identity, conflict, society, memory, culture, nature, exploration.
